English

The English Department is composed of a large team of subject specialists who are fully qualified to teach English from Year 7-11. English lessons are taught in a suite of eight specialist rooms with access to a central office and resource area. English is also taught by two subject specialists in the Hub, a bespoke resource room for targeted intervention. The most up-to-date books, resources and ICT are used to actively engage students.

At KS3 every pupil has access to a wide range of texts and genres. Our English curriculum is broad and challenging and texts range from Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations to present day poetry.  We invest in new KS3 texts each year. The KS3 curriculum is constantly under review and is shared across the whole Cabot Learning Federation.

In Year 10 and Year 11 pupils study the AQA GCSE English and English Literature syllabus. This integrated course leads to two separate grades in GCSE English and English Literature and is assessed entirely by examination. Our results are excellent and above the national average: in 2019 74% of pupils gained grades 4-9 in English Language and 70% in English Literature.

The academic curriculum is enriched by a programme of extra curricular activities which include visits from authors, trips and competitions. Our KS3 students have been successful in the Young Writers’ creative writing competition Mini Sagas and have had their work published nationally.
