Bristol Metropolitan raises Sickle Cell awareness

As part of our Black History Month celebrations at Bristol Metropolitan Academy, we focused on raising awareness of Sickle Cell Anaemia, a condition that disproportionately affects people from African and Caribbean backgrounds and is deeply relevant to our diverse school community.

During our Belonging Monday tutor time session, students explored what Sickle Cell Anaemia is and how it impacts individuals and families within our community. This learning laid the foundation for a powerful week of action and solidarity.

On Tuesday, Rich Dixon and his team of student helpers led a vibrant ‘Wear Something Red’ non-uniform day in support of Sickle Cell Charity, Bristol. It was inspiring to see so many students and staff wearing red to show their support, creating a positive and unified atmosphere across the academy.

At lunchtime, representatives from Sickle Cell Bristol hosted a pop-up awareness stall, which generated a real buzz among students. Their presence helped deepen understanding and sparked meaningful conversations.

Jo Fisher Assistant Principal and Designated Teacher said: “We were so proud to present the charity with a cheque for £762.92, raised through generous donations from staff and students.

“A huge well done to Rich Dixon, the student team, and everyone who contributed to making the day such a success.”
