Bristol Metropolitan students visit robotics lab

A group of Year 10 students from Bristol Metropolitan Academy recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the renowned Bristol Robotics Lab.

The visit provided an engaging and educational experience, giving the students a glimpse into the cutting-edge world of robotics research.

The visit began with an exclusive tour of the lab, where students were introduced to various innovative projects, some of which were classified and top-secret.

Following the tour, students participated in a hands-on robotics workshop designed to immerse them in the role of roboticists tasked with monitoring environmental conditions on a distant planet.

During the workshop, they worked with breadboards to create circuits featuring components such as a light sensor and a pump. They then coded an Arduino microcontroller to respond to environmental changes, such as activating the pump when soil moisture levels dropped too low.

This practical experience allowed students to combine their creativity with technical skills, simulating real-world problem-solving scenarios.

To round off the visit, students had the opportunity to engage with PhD researchers at the lab, learning about their innovative projects and asking questions about their academic journeys and career paths.

A spokesperson for Bristol Metropolitan Academy commented: “We are incredibly grateful to Bristol Robotics Lab for providing such an inspiring experience for our students.

“The opportunity to explore real-world robotics applications and interact with experts has left our students feeling excited and motivated about future STEM opportunities.”
